“I purchased Sophia Tolli Prinia Y11552 at Signature Bridal & Formal in Townsville, QLD Australia. My maid of honour actually pointed it out to me on the rack! I’m an indecisive person, but after trying on nearly 100 dresses at various stores I kept coming back to this dress. I fell in love with the French Beige/Ivory colour option and ordered a cathedral length ecru veil to match. I loved the contrasting lace and detailing on the bodice, and the delicate belt.
We were married on the afternoon of Friday 20th October 2017 beneath a sprawling raintree in a beautiful garden. The date was also our tenth anniversary, so it was an extra special celebration. Townsville experienced unseasonal rain in the week of our wedding, where a backup indoor ceremony plan was put into place the night before, but miraculously the skies cleared the morning of our wedding and the sun shone all day so we could have the outdoor ceremony we always dreamed of.
I walked down the aisle with my parents to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” with a silver sixpence in my shoe borrowed from my grandmother. During the ceremony my bridesman performed a moving reading of “Love is a Temporary Madness” from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which perfectly described our long term commitment to each other. We exchanged personal vows we wrote separately in our hotel room the night before, and I didn’t miss the chance to slip in some subtle references from my favourite Disney movies into mine! We also incorporated a love letters ceremony, where we placed handwritten love letters to each other and a bottle of wine into a handmade timber box to open together on a future anniversary. We had two of our best friends who introduced us in the bridal party, so we invited them to sign our marriage certificate as witnesses.
Fall is my favourite season, so we chose a rich colour scheme of burgundy, navy and gold. I designed the wedding stationery and cake topper to match. The groom and groomsmen had navy suits custom made while on holiday in Bali. I asked my bridal party to each choose something they loved in burgundy to achieve a mismatched look. My handsome bridesman wore a burgundy suit and tie! We incorporated beautiful and long lasting Australian native flowers and foliage into our bouquets, centrepieces and other floral arrangements.
While our guests enjoyed a cocktail hour at our reception venue we took photos in the garden, and later atop a nearby hill overlooking the coast at sunset. We had a large bridal party so chose a spacious party bus to transport everyone in comfort between locations.
We celebrated with our guests at The Banquet Centre, a luxurious private bar and ballroom above a restaurant with an onsite brewery. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ “Home” was the perfect entrance song. The venue placed dozens of candles all around the room and in the fireplaces to create a dreamy ambience. We wanted to seat our bridal party and their partners together for the night, so a kings table configuration where we were seated at the head of the table was perfect. The table was accentuated by festoon bulbs draped overhead. Everyone was moved to tears and laughter by moving speeches made by our parents and bridal party. Guests also enjoyed a premium photo booth that printed 2 photo strips, one to take home and one to stick in our guestbook album along with a heartfelt message. I designed custom photo strips to match our stationery. Guests could also send their own phone snaps to the booth to print, or record video messages for us during the night.
We personalized a delicious 2 course buffet dinner to cater to everyone’s tastes and dietary requirements. I love to bake, so made our cake (semi naked caramel mud with salted caramel frosting) and cupcakes (mix of chocolate and vanilla). We topped the cake with the quote “You are my greatest adventure” which was a theme that carried through from our vows to the reception. We cut our cake to a shortened version of Jon McLaughlin’s “So Close”. There wasn’t a crumb left at the end of the night!
We danced to Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” for our first dance, and were later joined on the dance floor by our bridal party and guests for some of our favourite songs including Ellie Goulding’s “Still Falling For You” and Vance Joy’s “Fire and the Flood”. Later in the night we played the “Shoe Game”, which had the whole room in stitches! The DJ played guest song requests that we collected with RSVPs on our wedding website, and our guests had a riot on the dance floor. We made sure to take a moment to sneak outside to the bar together to take in the day while our photographer took some couple shots.
Guests took home our favourite salted caramel popcorn as favours, and after departing the room to John Legend’s “All of Me” at midnight, we had a sparkler send off downstairs and farewelled guests.
The best part of the day was exchanging our personal vows and finally becoming husband and wife with our loved ones as witness. We also loved all the heartfelt speeches that our videographer captured to relive in the future.
We spent the weekend with our out-of-town family and guests (upside of a Friday wedding), before departing for an unforgettable 3 week honeymoon in Japan.”
