We are officially obsessed with grey moissanite engagement rings! Specifically Kristin Coffin’s graceful vintage inspired designs. Every time we see an engagement ring that’s not a diamond we think how lucky brides are today, that they can choose any type of stone they fancy. Grey moissanite is on our wish list! We don’t know if it’s their deep steely grey color (we prefer the cooler hues), their incredible sparkle or the fact that they are now extremely rare since Charles & Colvard are no longer creating greys. Perhaps it’s a combination of all three. For those of you new to moissanite, a little history ~ Moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral known as silicon carbide. French chemist Henri Moissan discovered this mineral in 1893 while examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. Moissan spent the rest of his life trying to recreate this rare mineral in his laboratory. It wasn’t until the late 1990’s that scientists working in a research laboratory in North Carolina developed a thermal growing process that creates silicon carbide crystals. Charles & Colvard was the first firm to introduce moissanite to the jewelry market in 1998 after receiving patents to create and market lab-grown silicone carbide gemstones. To learn more about moissanites check out Charles & Colvard’s website here. History aside, if you love sparkle then feast your eyes on these stunners below. You won’t be disappointed and maybe a grey moissanite engagement ring will be in your future!
