Maybe you’ve seen it on ABC’s The Bachelor. Maybe you’ve seen it on Pinterest. Maybe you’ve seen it in your dreams but nothing compares to seeing The Buccaneer in person! Founded in the 17th century, St. Croix’s Buccaneer is the Caribbean’s longest running resort. Historically modern and family-run for generations, the resort blends old world charm with warm hospitality and world-class amenities. The Buccaneer is a premier destination resort for weddings, honeymoons, vow renewals, family vacations and a myriad of sports including golf and tennis.
For the History Buff
Completely modern today, The Buccaneer has a fascinating historical background. In 1653, Charles Martel, a Knight of Malta, constructed the first building on Estate Shoys where The Buccaneer is currently located. In an effort to protect against enemies, this French Greathouse was placed out of sight of the sea. After the Danes bought the island in 1733, Governor von Prock built his home on the estate, turning the French Greathouse into a sugar factory and erecting the mill that is preserved just as it was in the days when sugar was king.
Michael Shoy, the Estate Shoys namesake, bought the estate and began growing cotton. Later, the Heyliger Company raised cattle here. In 1947, the Armstrong family, who had owned and operated the cattle estate since 1922, opened The Buccaneer for business with eleven guest rooms – the first hotel in St. Croix to be built and operated by an island family. Guests, AKA “continentals,” made the two-day trip from the mainland to stay at The Buccaneer and took great pride in lending a helping hand by mixing their own drinks, raking the beach, painting furniture, and planning meals.
In the early days, before modern tourist attractions existed, guests gathered nightly for cocktails. Today, The Buccaneer offers live music and fine dining but also maintains the repertoire of cocktails popular among early guests, including Cruzan Confusion, Raising Cane, Caribbean Sunset and Jump-Up-and-Kiss-Me.
